Look at the role of packaging with a broad view, across the supply chain

At Faes, packaging means much more than the packaging itself and the physical act. We look at the total process, your entire supply chain. Which links in the chain does packaging affect and how can we make this run more smoothly? We call this packaging management.

To give you an idea of exactly what this means, we’ve listed 5 opportunities for better packaging management for you:

1. Make clear arrangements regarding packaging

In many industrial environments, the topic of packaging is not high on the priority list. While huge cost savings can be achieved by clear agreements and procedures with all stakeholders in the supply chain.

2. Review all operations and processes around packaging

You can only assess the true efficiency of a package by looking at all the operations, processes and information flows surrounding it. This expertise can of course be obtained externally. The costs and effort involved will generally be quickly recouped by the savings you make as a result.

3. Preventing damage (DOAs).

Field research on DOAs (Defect on Arrival) in service logistics indicates that 30% of damages are attributable to packaging. You can read more about one of these studies in this e-book.

4. Reduce transportation costs

Freight costs are based on weight and volume. This is not always taken into account when developing packaging. As a result, air is shipped. While the cost of transport can be up to six times higher than the cost of packaging. A quick return on investment! In this case you can read how we helped Philips Healthcare reduce their transport costs.

5. Fourth parties and web-based applications

With new techniques such as intelligent Web-based applications, it is possible to continuously monitor all packaging activities, identify optimization opportunities and roll out improvements.

More and more chain partners are strongly looking for a new way of working together and the right way to do it. Some call this an ‘ecosystem’ or ‘moving up the chain’, others speak of ‘partnerships’ or ‘control towers’; we prefer to call it ‘fourth parties’. Here you can think of Fourth Party Logistics or Fourth Party Packaging. What exactly 4PL and 4PP mean, you can read more about that here.
