Why it’s smart to engage in sustainable packaging

Sustainable packaging requires more than simply reducing material use. The greatest benefits are achieved when dimensions, protection, reuse and logistical deployment are assessed together. Packaging that is too large creates unnecessary costs for void fill, handling, storage and transport, while packaging that is too small increases the risk of damage and returns. Waste can also arise further along the supply chain when packaging does not meet the labelling requirements, quantities or working methods of subsequent parties.

For repeated shipments, returnable packaging can be more attractive both financially and environmentally than single-use packaging. The break-even point is determined not only by the purchase price, but also by the number of shipments, transport distance, volume, return logistics and the indirect costs of damage and rejection. Reuse also contributes to lower material consumption, less waste and greater customer satisfaction.

For management, this means that packaging decisions should be based on total costs and performance throughout the entire life cycle. A wooden crate may be suitable for one-off or limited internal use, but its susceptibility to wear and moisture and its limited impact resistance make it less suitable for systematic reuse. A flight case, by contrast, is designed for repeated use, provides consistent protection and can be cleaned, repaired and reconditioned. By designing packaging from a supply-chain-wide perspective and calculating the return in advance, sustainable packaging becomes a practical instrument for structurally reducing costs, damage, CO₂ emissions and the use of raw materials.
