Within a high-tech ecosystem, logistics processes can quickly become fragmented across individual companies, suppliers and service providers. As a result, each party primarily optimises its own part of the chain, while inventory, transport, packaging and capacity remain insufficiently aligned. At Brainport Industries Campus, Faes therefore fulfils the role of supply chain orchestrator, centrally coordinating logistics and packaging management as one integrated system.

The campus brings together manufacturing companies, suppliers, knowledge institutions and other partners focused on advanced production technology. A future-proof Advanced Manufacturing Logistics system must ensure that material flows and packaging continuously match the current needs of the participating companies. This requires a single central point of contact, shared agreements and visibility into availability, performance and capacity across organisational boundaries.

For operations, supply chain and management, this approach results in less damage, higher delivery reliability and more efficient use of people, space and resources. By sharing knowledge, capacity and facilities, companies can respond more effectively to peaks in demand and disruptions. At the same time, unnecessary logistics movements, empty transport, material consumption and waste are reduced. Supply chain orchestration therefore becomes not only a means of lowering costs, but also a foundation for scalable production, innovation and shared sustainability objectives.

Our vision of future proof logistics becomes reality

Outsourcing chain management to one central party, which ensures that logistics processes within and between companies run more efficiently. If it is up to us this is the future of logistics and the role that we as Faes will fulfill on the Brainport Industries Campus in Eindhoven. In April 2021 we will take over this task from the current logistics service provider at BIC: Rubix.

Brainport Industries Campus as high-tech hotspot

Brainport Industries Campus does not want to be just another business center, but a high-tech hotspot for technology companies, developers, training institutes and a breeding ground for innovative start-ups. In fact, that combination creates synergy in many areas. One of the resulting opportunities is economies of scale; through purchasing combinations, knowledge sharing and common use of (valuable) space and resources. BIC initiated the ‘Factory of the Future’ innovation program, including the Advanced Manufacturing Logistics (AML) fieldlab, which Faes joined through the cooperation we already had with our client KMWE; an important supplier to ASML and also located on the campus.

A state-of-the-art AML system

One of BIC’s goals was to realize a state-of-the-art AML system on campus, where logistic flows would be continuously supported in the best possible way. This benefits such manufacturing companies in the high-tech industry, but at the same time it also demands something from them, for example; transparency and openness in prices, sources, knowledge, orders and other internal information.

It takes a switch and quite a bit of mutual trust to merge the logistics of different companies on campus into an optimally functioning ecosystem. So it is important that all partners who have a role in this understand the essence and believe in the concept. Initially, we as Faes would only take on the 4PP (4th Party Packaging) aspect, but after the withdrawal of logistics service provider Rubix, it was agreed that we will take care of the entire 4th Party Logistics for Brainport Industries Campus.
