Why preventing DOA requires more than a stronger shipping case
At Faes, we rarely see dead-on-arrival damage as an isolated packaging problem. In many cases, the visible damage is only the final outcome of a mismatch between the product, its packaging and the logistics process around it.
That is why we do not start by simply adding more foam or selecting a heavier case. We first look at how the product can fail. Is it sensitive to shock, continuous vibration, moisture, dust, static electricity or temperature fluctuations? We then relate those vulnerabilities to the actual transport and handling conditions. A package that performs well during controlled road transport may still fail when it is repeatedly transferred, stacked, stored outdoors or handled under operational pressure.
This analysis also prevents a common mistake: over-engineering the packaging. More material does not automatically mean better protection. Excessive cushioning can transfer loads in the wrong way, restrict ventilation, create pressure points or make handling unnecessarily difficult. Effective protection comes from controlling the forces that reach the product, not from surrounding it with as much material as possible.
Our engineers therefore treat the packaging, the product and the operational environment as one system. Depending on the application, this can involve custom engineering, material selection, internal fixation, system integration, technical specifications and validation against relevant transport or environmental requirements. For robust or mission-critical applications, we also consider how the solution will be used in practice: who handles it, how often it is opened, which equipment travels with it and whether components must remain accessible or deployable.
The result is not simply a case that survives transport. It is a repeatable packaging solution in which the protection level is traceable to the actual risks in the supply chain. That distinction matters, because preventing DOA incidents is not about making packaging stronger. It is about making the complete product-packaging system predictable.
