Summary of this article

EPP offers a combination of properties that traditional plastic cases or foam interiors often provide only separately. The material is lightweight, shock-absorbing and insulating, as well as resistant to moisture, oil, chemicals and temperature fluctuations. As a result, a single packaging solution can protect the product while also reducing transport weight and physical strain during handling. This can provide a significant logistical advantage, particularly for large, fragile or irregularly shaped products.

Another key strength of EPP is its design flexibility. Cases and interiors can be precisely tailored to the product and its intended use, reducing the need for additional structural components or separate protective materials. The required investment in moulds makes EPP particularly attractive for recurring applications and sufficient production volumes. The business case should therefore not be based solely on the purchase price, but on the total lifecycle costs, including transport damage, weight, handling, replacement frequency and return logistics.

For procurement, engineering and operations, this means that EPP adds the most value when packaging forms part of a repeatable logistics cycle. The material is robust, reusable and recyclable at the end of its service life, making it suitable for closed-loop packaging systems. By jointly considering product protection, ergonomics, transport costs and circularity during the design phase, an EPP case can develop from a protective solution into a sustainable and cost-efficient carrier for the entire logistics process.

Are you looking for transport packaging that can take a beating? Are you going to transport fragile equipment with a different shape or size? Can your product withstand high or low temperatures? Does the packaging need to be portable by hand and therefore lightweight? Faes offers an excellent packaging solution with a wide range of applications: the EPP (expanded polypropylene) case.

What makes EPP so suitable as a packaging solution?

EPP is often confused with Styrofoam and seen as a filling material or for the inside of a suitcase. It also certainly has similarities, but EPP is much sturdier and harder. Faes makes cases for several customers that are composed entirely of EPP. As such, there are numerous advantages:

Lightweight – even in large sizes

EPP is extremely lightweight, even when used for large cases. This makes it ideal for transporting relatively large products that still need to be easy to carry. Compared with a plastic case of the same dimensions, an EPP case is many times lighter.

Can be made in any shape

Some products have an unusual shape. Even so, you want the product to remain stable and fit securely inside the case during transport. An EPP case can be manufactured in virtually any shape and size. A custom mould is created specifically for this purpose. As a result, the initial tooling costs are somewhat higher, making EPP particularly suitable for larger production volumes.

Shockproof and robust

Despite its low weight, an EPP case is robust, durable and highly shock-absorbent. It can withstand heavy static and dynamic loads. EPP is available in various densities and hardness levels. The right option depends on the application. We would be happy to calculate the required hardness for you.

Temperature resistant

EPP can withstand temperature differences well and is highly insulating. This is ideal for products that need to be protected from heat or cold.

Resistant to oils and chemicals

When you use a case for transporting tools and machinery (or parts), it may have oils, acids or other chemicals left on it. EPP is very resistant to this.

Durable and recyclable

There are two reasons why EPP cases are more durable than various alternatives:

  • EPP packaging is intended to last a long time. For example, it is often used as returnable packaging in the medical sector. After use, the packaging goes back to the supplier, who uses it for a new order.
  • At the end of its (long) service life, EPP is recyclable. A side note here is that the material is collected separately and offered to a processing party.

Interested in an EPP case?

EPP cases are therefore suitable for various transport applications. With EPP, we always offer customization and have a solution for specific transportation needs. Have we aroused your interest? 1
Intake
During an initial consultation, our packaging experts will identify your specific requirements. By discussing the criteria the packaging must meet, they can work with our engineers to develop a concept.
2
Concept
Is standard packaging an option, or is bespoke packaging required? This decision is made in consultation with the consultants and designers
3
Design
Based on the concept, you will receive a suitable proposal. Thanks to our short lines of communication, we can easily make adjustments whenever necessary. Are you happy with the advice? If so, we’ll work towards producing a prototype.
4
Prototype
Throughout the process, we present concepts digitally and, where necessary, submit 2D drawings for review. You and your project team members can provide feedback or approve them, ensuring that decisions are clearly documented and the review process runs efficiently.
5
Production
Once approval has been given, our skilled craftsmen get to work on producing the packaging. From closures to a fully bespoke interior: we ensure that all your requirements are carefully incorporated into the final solution.
6
Service
We remain involved even after delivery. We are happy to take care of all your packaging needs, so that you can count on our support for maintenance, modifications or more complex issues.
