Summary of this article

Packaging as a Service is often regarded as an alternative financing model for packaging, even though its true value is much broader. Industrial packaging can cost thousands of euros per unit, while complete packaging pools may tie up millions of euros in working capital. Storage, return logistics, maintenance and refurbishment add further costs. The key trade-off lies between ownership and availability: companies need continuous access to the right packaging, but do not necessarily need to own it themselves.

When packaging assets are held on the company’s balance sheet, costs and responsibilities remain dispersed across finance, operations, logistics and sustainability. Return flows can be difficult to organise, packaging occupies valuable warehouse space and it is often unclear where individual units end up after delivery. This creates not only a capital burden, but also risks related to loss, low utilisation and insufficient control over reuse and sustainable end-of-life processing. For management, this means that packaging should be assessed not only by its purchase price, but by its total cost per use cycle.

Packaging as a Service transfers ownership and part of the operational responsibility to a specialised provider. Depending on the model selected, this provider may manage rental, maintenance, repair, just-in-time delivery, return logistics and tracking through RFID or RTLS. This creates a pay-per-use model with transparent costs, lower capital requirements, reduced storage needs and a better-controlled circular process. In this way, packaging shifts from an asset on the balance sheet to a scalable service that structurally supports availability, return on investment and CO₂ performance.

Packaging and load carriers cost the manufacturing industry unnecessarily and have a negative impact on the carbon footprint. By renting (pay per use) rather than purchasing packaging, you reduce your supply chain costs and have less capital tie-up.
