How Faes Translates Packaging Standards into Reliable Solutions
At Faes, certification is not treated as a final test or a box-ticking exercise. A standard such as ISTA, ASTM or MIL-STD only becomes valuable when its requirements are translated into the actual risks of the product and its logistics chain. The same test profile is not automatically suitable for every product, route or application.
Our engineers therefore first assess the product’s vulnerability, weight distribution, critical components and sensitivity to shock, vibration, moisture, dust, temperature and electrostatic discharge. We also consider how the packaging will be stored, stacked, transported, opened and reused. These insights determine which standard, test level and acceptance criteria are technically relevant.
Certification Starts with the Right Engineering Assumptions
This approach is important because a packaging test can only validate the conditions included in the test plan. When the real supply chain contains additional handling, repacking, long-term storage or more severe environmental exposure, passing a generic test does not automatically prevent a DOA.
Research supported by Faes among three international high-tech OEMs showed that DOAs rarely have one isolated cause. Packaging, transport, storage, product quality and handling can all contribute to failure. The research also showed that simplifying packaging processes and providing clearer packaging information helped one company reduce logistical DOAs from 0.46% to 0.22%.
