How does Faes translate military requirements into a packaging solution?
At Faes, we have extensive experience in developing packaging solutions for defense equipment. This includes projects for the Dutch Ministry of Defence, such as a custom transport solution for the vertical tail of an F-16. We do not start with a flight case, rack or container. We start with the equipment, its operational use and the requirements it must meet throughout transport, storage and deployment.
This means looking beyond dimensions and weight. Together with the customer, we translate the applicable requirements into concrete design criteria, taking into account factors such as shock and vibration, environmental exposure, handling, transport methods, accessibility and the need for rapid deployment. Relevant MIL-STD, STANAG or customer-specific requirements can therefore be considered from the beginning of the engineering process rather than checked only after the packaging has been designed.
For complex equipment, an accurate understanding of the product geometry is equally important. Where suitable CAD data is unavailable or cannot be shared, for example because of confidentiality or defense restrictions, we can use 3D scanning to digitally capture the equipment. Our engineers can use this data to develop an accurately fitting interior while taking vulnerable components, connectors and areas that must remain free from pressure into account.
The resulting concept can then be developed into a prototype and, where required, validated against the agreed test criteria. Faes can support the preparation of the test plan and coordinate the validation process with specialised testing partners. Findings from testing can be translated back into the design before the final packaging is produced.
For us, a defense packaging solution is therefore not simply a robust case. It is an engineered system in which protection, compliance, handling and operational deployment are considered together.
