Faes as a packaging partner for defence and security
Defence packaging is more than a case that meets a number of technical requirements. The packaging must suit the equipment, the transport route and the way the equipment is stored, moved and deployed in practice. That is why, at Faes, we do not start with a standard solution, but by mapping out the complete packaging requirement.
Our engineers translate the operational and technical requirements into custom packaging. In doing so, we consider factors such as the vulnerability of the equipment, shock and vibration loads, climatic conditions, handling, reuse and relevant MIL-STD, UN and NEN standards.
At Faes, we bring together several disciplines for this purpose:
- Custom engineering and packaging development for specific equipment and applications.
- Production and assembly of the packaging and protective interior.
- System integration, ensuring that the equipment, packaging and handling systems work together.
- Specification and testing of solutions based on the expected transport loads.
- Technical documentation and support with relevant standardisation and compliance requirements.
The importance of this integrated approach was demonstrated when packaging an F-16 vertical tail at Volkel Air Base. Because technical drawings were unavailable, we measured the component on site using 3D scanning technology. Based on this data, we developed and produced custom packaging, after which we assembled the different packaging components around the part at the air base.
For complex defence transport, packaging must do more than comply on paper. The solution must also be manufacturable, manageable and reliable within the operational environment. That is why we consider engineering, production and practical use as one integrated process from the outset.
