Risks at Construction Sites
A construction site is one of the most demanding environments for sensitive equipment. While conditions in a controlled factory setting are relatively stable, a construction site is dynamic and often unpredictable. This makes field equipment particularly vulnerable.
Environmental Factors
Rain, dust, mud and significant temperature fluctuations pose a direct threat to the functionality of equipment. Moisture can cause corrosion or short circuits, while dust and dirt can drastically reduce the service life of sensitive components.
Mechanical Factors
At construction sites, there is a high risk of equipment being dropped, struck or exposed to heavy vibrations from machinery and vehicles. Even a minor impact can result in permanent damage or reduced accuracy of measuring instruments.
Operational Factors
Equipment is often used intensively and must be moved regularly between storage, transport and the work site. This involves frequent loading and unloading, often by different parties. As a result, the risk of improper handling or insufficient protection during transport increases significantly.
Standards and Guidelines
International standards have been developed to manage these risks. Examples include IP and IK ratings, which indicate the level of protection against dust, water and impact, as well as MIL-STD-810 for testing equipment under extreme conditions. For packaging, test standards such as ISTA and ASTM are important for ensuring transport safety. These standards provide an objective basis for selecting the appropriate level of protection.
