Lithium-ion batteries are classified as Class 9 dangerous goods because of their high energy density. Damage, misuse, defects or incorrect packaging can lead to overheating, short circuits and fire. Transport risks can be managed when the applicable regulations are followed, but this requires a packaging solution specifically developed for the battery type, its application and the selected mode of transport.

UN approval does not apply solely to the outer case. The packaging is tested and certified as a complete combination of the case, interior and contents. Modifying or removing the interior may therefore invalidate the certification. Among other requirements, the solution must prevent batteries from moving or coming into contact with one another, provide protection against short circuits and withstand prescribed loads, such as a drop test. Correct labels and markings are also essential and vary depending on the transport conditions.

For procurement, engineering, quality and logistics, this means that the packaging solution can only be selected once the battery and its logistical application have been fully specified. Relevant factors include the exact battery type, energy capacity, weight, dimensions, the number of cells or batteries, and whether they are transported separately or installed in a product. By linking this information in advance to a validly certified and reusable solution, organisations can reduce safety risks, delays and potential fines, while ensuring that the packaging can be used in a controlled manner over multiple transport cycles.

In our daily lives, lithium-ion batteries and accumulators are indispensable. You find them in electronic devices such as phones, laptops and tablets, or in larger size in e-bikes, forklifts and medical equipment.

Lithium-ion: not without risks

Are you going to transport devices with lithium batteries? Then you will quickly find out that there is a lot involved. Transporting li-ion batteries is not without risks (e.g., fire hazards) and therefore subject to laws and regulations that are regularly tightened.

Among other things, you should consider:

  • current UN regulations;
  • the type of transportation;
  • transporting the battery separately or in the device;
  • The suitability of the packaging in which you transport the battery.
