From wooden box to presentable, secure packaging solution

Philips Healthcare is a multifaceted technology company focused on improving people's lives through meaningful innovations. The healthcare division Philips Healthcare, headquartered in Best, now has more than 450 innovative products and services to its credit.

Philips Healthcare is not only responsible for the development of this equipment, but also provides clinically relevant training and programs worldwide, designed to increase the efficiency of using CT scanners, for example, and help improve the quality of care. Faes already developed various packaging solutions for the medical sector.

A pack for training equipment

Philips held an international “Users Meeting” in Copenhagen several years ago on Computer Tomography for 200 medical doctors and radiology lab technicians. Several leading physicians presented the results of their latest research, gave practical lessons and shared their experience on how to use new software or equipment. This kind of international customer training is almost always done with displays, desktops and servers from Philips in Best, which are shipped worldwide for this purpose.

Damages, defects and an unprofessional appearance

Initially, all this equipment was shipped in simple wooden crates, but this had some drawbacks:

  • Random compartmentalization: equipment and parts had no fixed place in the crate. As a result, this method of shipping was not only damage-prone, but parts were also frequently missing, because it was not possible for the sender (and receiver) to see at a glance whether parts were missing.
  • Surface-mounted handles and locks were used. This made them vulnerable to damage and they had to be replaced after almost every transport.
  • The simple wooden boxes (sometimes damaged) with training equipment did not have the desired professional look.

Philips Healthcare looking for new, professional packaging

Marcel van Diepen – System Engineer at Philips – contacted me. They were looking for professional, aesthetically pleasing packaging to ship their training equipment safely and conveniently. We realized this for Philips Healthcare:

  • We have designed flight cases so that each piece of equipment has its own custom compartment. This makes them better protected and you can immediately see if the shipment is complete.
  • The flight cases have built-in handles and locks. This keeps them from getting damaged and makes them last much longer.
  • We also took the exterior into account. The flight case is finished in the corporate identity color and features the Philips logo. Recognizable, beautiful and professional.
  • In the design, we took into account all the steps the packaging goes through on its way to its destination. For example, the packaging is tailored to transport requirements and the most optimal size for road transport, air transport and door and elevator openings. How important it is to consider transportation and why, you can read more about that here.

Marcel van Diepen, System Engineer at Philips - about Faes:

“We were looking for an appropriate solution to safely transport materials. After an initial introductory meeting with Bart Burmanje, I immediately had an adequate impression of both Bart and Faes. Thanks to their empathy and mutual trust, an innovative product was delivered in a very short time, within the set budget. The drawing, the fitting, the delivery; everything happened in no time and within the set budget. Moreover, Bart also always took that one step further. For example, he suggested putting the Philips brand name on the flight cases. Thus, the flightcase is not only a means of transport, but is regularly used as branding at various events. We have already received many positive reactions from our customers.”
